Spire of S. Domenico

P.zza S. Domenico Maggiore - Napoli (NA)

The so-called spire of S. Domenico dominates and characterizes the space of piazza S. Domenico Maggiore, closed above by the monumental apse of the church with the same name. It is a sort of pyramid-shaped obelisk, whose construction was promoted by the Fathers Dominicans and by the people's elected representatives, as an ex-voto after the terrible plague of 1656. The works started 2 years later, according to a design by Cosimo Fanzago, but ended only in 1736 with Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. It is important to notice the high relief showing the mermaid Parthenope, symbol of the city.
