Naples Underground

Piazza San Gaetano, 68 - Napoli (NA)

Manager: Association Napoli Sotterranea

The fascinating route proposed by the Association Napoli Sotterranea takes to the discovery of the maze of tunnels and caves that go through the Neapolitan subsoil. Since the Greek-Roman age, it was a common practice to extract from the tuffy subsoil the materials for constructing public buildings, besides the subsoil held the efficient network of aqueducts, with its tanks and channels.
We must also consider that after the fall of the Roman Empire many public buildings were abandoned and partially submerged by floods or collapsed due to earthquakes. Also in the subsoil it is possible to find evidences of these buildings: This is the case of the antique Roman theatre, that during the 15th century was incorporated into the houses of via Anticaglia, vico Cinquesanti and via S. Paolo.
This route also includes part of the Greek-Roman aqueduct, where the tuff caves date back to the 4th century B.C. The route is even more evocative because these caves were used as a shelter during the bombings of the Second World War.
