The museum was opened to the public in 1874, located in the historic centre of Capua in Palazzo Antignano. The archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri has defined the Museo Campano as "the most significant of the Italian civilisation in Campania". In addition to significantly valuable archaeological finds, including pottery and jewelry, it preserves the most important collection of Matres Matutae, from ancient Capua and the largest lapidarium in southern Italy.
