Chiesa di S. Maria degli Angeli a Pizzofalcone

P.zza S. Maria degli Angeli a Pizzofalcone, 3/5 - Napoli (NA)

Manager: Father Mario D'Orlando

The church was founded by the princess Costanza D'Oria del Carretto who in 1587 gave to the Order of Chierici Regolari Teatini the area where later the church was erected. The foundation stone was laid in 1600 and the works kept on until 1610. The architectural plan was entrusted to the teatine priest Francesco Grimaldi, who realised the majestic Latin-cross layout. Visual core of the bright interior is the high dome showing the Crowning of the Virgin in the glory of Paradise, final scene of the cycle of frescoes dedicated to the Life of the Virgin, painted in the compartments of the barrel vault in the central aisle by Giovan Battista Beinaschi between 1668 and 1675. The paintings by Beinaschi (in the inside of the façade: the dream of S. Joseph and the Flight into Egypt; in the vault, starting from the entrance: the Immaculate, the Nativity of Virgin, the Annunciation) represent the meaningful evidence of Baroque majestic decoration in Naples. It is also worth remembering the canvases located in the transept and apse: unique Neapolitan artworks of the teatine lay friar Francesco Maria Caselli, who sets the sacred scenes in monumental scenic designs. Here there are also some outstanding paintings by Luca Giordano in the chapel of Monte dei Morti, canvases and frescoes by Giovanni Bernardino Azzolino in the chapel dedicated to S. Carlo Borromeo and the sepulchres of Tito Angelini in the chapel of the family Serra di Gerace.
